Hill place, just east of Downtown Indianapolis, was built in 1853 by John Fitch
Hill and his wife Sarah, a Randolph of Virginia and a great-niece of Daniel
Boone. John’s older sister Sarah married the boy-next-door, Calvin Fletcher,
and bore him eleven children.
Sited on 220 acres, Hill Place provided vegetables and fruit to the growing
city as well as nursery tree and plant stock. The house is an early Italianate of
6,000 square feet featuring 12-foot ceilings on the first level and floors of
white maple, white and heart pine, and red oak. There is an elaborate staircase
with a walnut banister and all of the doorknobs are from now demolished
Indianapolis buildings. A two-story library is a contemporary addition.
Hill Place is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and
owned by Scott and Caran Keller.
