From Dino Sierp, IE Field Organizer
Good news! Goshen’s city council members will be voting on the amendment to include LGBT civil rights in their local human rights ordinance on Tuesday, August 18th at 7pm. If the amendment passes unanimously (7-0) it will become the third municipality in the state to have sexual orientation and gender identity added to their local ordinance. If they are unable to get the 7-0 vote, a vote (for the majority) will take place on Tuesday, September 1st at 7pm.
The local organization, Goshen for Civil Rights has been working tirelessly to develop a strong coalition of community allies and educating the community about the amendment. If you are a Goshen resident, please show your support by contacting the city council member representing your district by email or phone asking them to vote in favor of the amendment. If you have a personal story to share about job or housing discrimination, we need to hear from you! If you are not a Goshen resident, but know someone living in Goshen, please let them know! Members of the Goshen LGBT community and their allies are encouraged to attend the city council meetings to show their support in numbers. The more emails and calls they can receive, the stronger a message it will provide the Mayor and his council members. For further information:

On another note, committees are currently being organized in Columbus and Jeffersonville to work towards an amendment in their local human rights ordinance. The Gay Straight Alliance is coordinating the effort in Columbus and the IUS Civil Liberties Union student branch is leading the advocacy in Jeffersonville. If you would like to get involved or learn more, please contact GSA at Info@GSAcolumbusIN.org or IUSCLU at iusclu@gmail.com.
Indiana Equality’s Human Rights Ordinance Project is supported by the Tides Foundation’s State Equality Fund, a philanthropic partnership that includes the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the Gill Foundation, and anonymous donors.
